Homesteading doesn’t necessarily mean living on acreage with
big gardens lost of animals etc. for many it will have to be in the cities or
towns on a small lot usually around a quarter acre sometimes smaller.

So what do you do? First thing you can do is replace some of
your ornamental plants with fruit bearing plants like blueberries, raspberries,
black berries and strawberries etc. Plant some fruit and nut trees instead of
just shade trees. And of course have a garden. This can also be done in
planters where you had ornamentals and in many cases can even be interspersed
among the ornamentals. Also many things can be grown in pots and some even
indoors next to the sliding glass window or bay window for year round
production.

Start small now and get into the swing of things so you can
learn what works for your area and also try to use heirloom seeds and learn to collect seeds so if the SHTF you will have seed for more production if need be. If necessary in a seriously bad times that lawn in the back yard will make a nice size
garden plot.

Also you can have a few
chickens and or rabbits for eggs and meat. Make cages and do it on a small
scale. Some subdivision covenants in the cities even have provisions for
allowing a couple chickens, and rabbits are just children’s pets you know…

some very good advice. Not eveyone lives in the country or has a retreat. Get to know your nieghbors too so you have an idea what you might be dealing with in bad times, Ally or?

Something that might also be considered for city dwellers is pygmy goats. They are usually bought as pets, though they are edible and are good milk producers for their size. They usually top out at around 17 inches and at the most will weigh 60 pounds, putting them into the same size range as a medium to large dog.

I don't know much about city laws, etc, but rabbits are an idea. They reproduce like , well, like rabbits, take very small space in hutches, and taste sort of like chicken. We had some for a while, but having 4 children who named them all, we never actually killed any of them. But for the braver, it may be a good idea? You can grow worms in the manure in boxes under the hutches, and sell them too. Did you know that the fur of rabbits is the second warmest fur in the world? Second only to musk ox I believe. And you can make mittens, hats, etc out of it. I hear it is easy to tan the fur.

In my opinion, in an urban setting--if you intend to stay there and not retreat to the country in a disaster--you should not worry so much about food, and stockpile water and wine.

Most Americans are healthy and plump, and could tolerate a forced fast for weeks. Water is a major concern, though, especially in an urban environment.
